GREAT BAY, St. Maarten ( June 23, 2012) – On Thursdays press conference, 1st Vice President of the Windward Islands Chamber of Labour Unions (WICLU), Claire Elshot said that for the last months, they have been talking about the rise in employment agencies. “A number of employment agencies that we have operating on St. Maarten, are contributing to an infringement of the workers’ rights”.

She said that “they have to be structured and legalized, there are laws, but we have to make sure that when it comes to the workers, that the fundamental rights are still secured”. “The employment agencies have become a norm to be able to circumvent some of the basic responsibilities that employers would have where it pertains to the rights of the workers”.
